When something doesn’t quite fit
You may feel that something about your child’s experience is different, even if it’s hard to explain. She may be bright, thoughtful and doing well in some areas, yet you might also notice anxiety, emotional overwhelm, or difficulties with friendships.
This can be confusing, particularly when it doesn’t match common expectations of autism.
Why it is often missed
Autism in girls can look different. Many girls learn to observe and copy others, managing on the surface while finding social situations tiring or confusing underneath. Rather than showing distress outwardly, they may internalise it, which can appear as anxiety or emotional overwhelm.
Because of this, their difficulties are often less visible.
How it might look
You might notice that your child finds friendships hard to navigate, feels unsettled in busy or unpredictable situations, or needs things to feel consistent and predictable. She may also seem particularly tired after social or everyday demands.
Understanding your child
