Joint Child and Teen Autism and ADHD Assessment

Tabla Psychology provides joint autism and ADHD assessments for children and teenagers in Hampshire, helping families build a clearer and more complete understanding of their child’s developmental, emotional and learning profile.

Autism and ADHD frequently occur together. Sometimes the characteristics of one can overlap with, mask or complicate the other, making it harder for families and schools to understand what is really happening. A child may appear socially able but be exhausted by masking, highly focused in some situations but unable to regulate attention in others, or emotionally overwhelmed by the combined impact of sensory, social, executive-functioning and learning demands.

By assessing autism and ADHD together, we can develop a more integrated understanding of your child’s strengths, differences and support needs. The aim is not simply to consider diagnosis, but to help families understand how their child thinks, learns, communicates, regulates and manages everyday life at home and in school.

We take a thoughtful, evidence-based and child-friendly approach, combining Clinical Psychology and Educational Psychology expertise to build a clear and meaningful understanding of your child.

A calm, welcoming place for children and families

Set on a quiet farm in a converted dairy, our clinic offers a peaceful space away from the feel of a busy medical setting. We aim to help children and teenagers feel safe, respected and understood throughout the assessment process. Freddie, our gentle service dog, may also be available during visits where appropriate, helping some children and young people feel more at ease.

What does the assessment involve?

Our joint assessment is designed to build a clear and complete understanding of your child’s profile across both autism and ADHD.

The assessment includes:

  • Questionnaires and rating scales completed by parents, school staff and your child where appropriate
  • An in-clinic autism assessment, including the ADOS-2, a gold-standard observational tool used as part of autism assessment
  • QbCheck, an objective computer-based measure of attention, impulsivity and activity levels, used to support ADHD assessment alongside wider clinical information
  • A detailed developmental interview with parents, carried out online with a Clinical Psychologist
  • Exploration of sensory processing differences, emotional wellbeing, anxiety and functional impact
  • Review of school information to understand how your child presents in the classroom, socially and across the wider school day
  • Clinical integration of all available information to understand how autism and ADHD characteristics may overlap, interact or mask one another

All assessments are reviewed and integrated by experienced clinicians, including Consultant Psychologists and practitioners with specialist experience in neurodevelopmental assessment. This helps ensure that the final opinion is clinically robust, balanced and useful for families and schools.

What happens after the assessment?

Once all parts of the assessment are complete, our team carefully reviews the information gathered to build a clear and accurate understanding of your child.

You will receive a detailed written report that includes:

  • The outcome of the assessment, including any diagnoses where appropriate
  • A clear explanation of your child’s strengths, differences and areas of need
  • Consideration of how autism and ADHD characteristics may interact
  • Practical, personalised recommendations for home and school
  • Guidance on next steps and possible support options

We also offer follow-up appointments if you would like further support in understanding the report, sharing it with school, or planning what comes next.

Fees

The cost of a joint autism and ADHD assessment is £3,800.

Choosing a combined assessment can be more efficient than completing separate assessments and helps ensure a cohesive understanding of your child’s needs across both autism and ADHD.

Do you use QbCheck?

Yes. We use QbCheck as part of our ADHD assessment process for children and young people where clinically appropriate.

QbCheck is an objective computer-based assessment that measures attention, impulsivity and activity levels. It does not diagnose ADHD on its own. Instead, it provides additional objective information that can be considered alongside developmental history, clinical interview, parent and school rating scales, direct observation and professional judgement.

This can be particularly helpful where questionnaire information is mixed, where a child presents differently at home and school, or where there is a complex profile involving autism, anxiety, masking, learning needs or emotional regulation differences.

Do you prescribe ADHD medication?

No. Tabla Psychology is a psychology-led service, so we do not prescribe medication directly.

Where medication is being considered, families can seek advice from an appropriately qualified prescriber, such as a psychiatrist or specialist medical practitioner. We are able to liaise with prescribing clinicians where appropriate and with parental consent.

Our ADHD assessments are completed in line with NICE guidance and DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria, and our reports are designed to provide clear clinical information that can support onward discussion with prescribing professionals.

Do you assess autism and ADHD at the same time?

Yes. Where there are indicators of both autism and ADHD, a joint assessment can be clinically helpful. Autism and ADHD often overlap, and assessing both areas together can help avoid a fragmented picture. It also allows us to consider how attention, impulsivity, sensory processing, social communication, emotional regulation, masking, anxiety and learning needs interact in everyday life.

A combined assessment can be especially useful when a child appears complex, when previous assessment has only considered one area, or when parents and school are seeing different aspects of the child’s presentation.

This page is focused on children and teenagers. Tabla Psychology also offers some adult assessment and consultation services, but our core joint autism and ADHD pathway is designed for children and young people, with close attention to school functioning, learning, family life and developmental history.

“I thought the clinic was a perfect setting...a truly welcoming and engaging space. My son Alex felt instantly comfortable and at ease to enter and start investigating with the toys. I think he could have happily stayed there all afternoon.”

“Just wanted to thank you Tammie for yesterday’s session with F. He felt at ease with you."

Mrs LParent

Hi,

I just wanted to send an email saying the biggest thank you.
You carried out my son Archies assessment in July last year, I just wanted to say how unbelievably amazing his report was and I’m so sorry it’s taken me this long to show my thanks.
We have been on an incredibly emotional tough journey the last 12 months and I can’t even count how many times his report has help me advocate for him.
(So many professionals have commented on how phenomenal his report is!)

Thank you for capturing his needs and communicating them so effortlessly.

So thank you for all so so much.
