Many parents see their child freeze up around maths, but how do you know when it’s more than anxiety?

Dyscalculia is estimated to affect up to 7% of the general population and is a specific learning difficulty that affects an individual’s ability to understand number concepts, estimation, time, and spatial awareness.

What Is Dyscalculia?

Dyscalculia is to numbers what dyslexia is to reading – however it often goes unrecognised. Children with dyscalculia may be bright, articulate, and even do well in other areas, but consistently underperform or panic when faced with numerical tasks.

Signs to look out for:

  • Difficulty remembering maths facts or times tables
  • Struggles with time, money, or estimating amounts
  • Reliance on fingers long past expected ages
  • Confusion over left vs right
  • Disproportionate anxiety or avoidance around maths

Why It Matters

Left unsupported, dyscalculia can lead to low self-esteem, school avoidance, and long-term academic impact.
