As a parent, it’s completely normal to wonder whether your child is keeping up at school, especially when it comes to reading and writing. Every child learns differently and develops at their own pace but sometimes the struggles they experience can point to something more specific, such as dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a common learning difference that affects reading, spelling and writing skills. It has nothing to do with intelligence and, with the right support, children with dyslexia can do incredibly well. Often, the first step is simply recognising the signs early.

Reading Difficulties

One of the earlier sign’s parents notice is difficulty with reading. You may find your child avoiding reading altogether, getting stuck on familiar words or taking much longer to read than other children their age. Some children also find it difficult to sound out words or confuse letters that look similar, such as “b” and “d.”

Spelling and Writing Challenges

Spelling can also be a challenge. Your child may spell the same word differently in one piece of work or rely on guessing rather than sounding words out. Writing tasks can feel frustrating or overwhelming and their ideas may not come across clearly on paper, even when they can explain them well verbally.

Other Signs to Notice

There can also be signs outside of reading and writing. Some children struggle to remember sequences like the days of the week, follow multi-step instructions or stay focused during literacy-based tasks. You may even notice their confidence dipping if they begin comparing themselves to classmates.

When to Seek Support

Having one or two of these signs does not automatically mean your child has dyslexia. However, if these difficulties are ongoing and starting to affect their confidence, wellbeing or enjoyment of learning, it may be worth seeking further support.

Early identification can make a huge difference. With the right strategies and support in place, children with dyslexia can build confidence, develop strong learning skills and feel more positive about school.
