Speech and language assessment FAQs
What is this assessment for?
Speech and language assessment measures language production, language comprehension, nonverbal communication and gestures (including gaze and joint attention in young children), pragmatic and figurative language, rhythm, volume, and content of speech.
Who carries out the assessment?
Our Speech and Language team is led Lisa Lawrence (Specialist Speech and Language Therapist).
Speech and language therapists (SLTs) are allied health professionals (AHP).
What happens during the assessment?
Initially, you will be invited to attend an online consultation to discuss your child’s needs.
Based the individual needs of each child, Lisa will then carry out the most appropriate assessment for your child during an in-clinic session, lasting around an hour.
We may also be able to support by online consultation, working directly with your child or providing advice to the family, carers or school.
What happens afterwards?
Following your in-clinic assessment, a report will be produced within 6 – 8 weeks.
If reports are required more urgently, we are able to accommodate this for an additional fee.
Does the assessment follow HCPC and RCSLT guidelines?
Our assessments are conduced within both HCPC standards of conduct, performance and ethics as well as the RCSLT Code of Ethics and Conduct.
Is there any follow up support?
We are able to recommend any follow up support that is needed and put you in touch with the relevant people and organisations.
What other professional support is available?
As we work as part of a team made up of professionals in educational psychology, clinical psychology, speech and language therapy and occupational therapy, we are able to offer support for any further needs identified in your assessment.
How much does it cost?
Costs are from £750 to £1500 depending what assessment is commissioned.
What if I am interested in several of your services?
If you are interested in combining this mental health assessment with one of our other assessments, we will be able to do so at a reduced fee.
Is there anything else I need to know?
If you have any more questions or would like more information, please contact us.
What we cannot help with
As we are not a crisis service, we are unfortunately unable to offer assessment of mental illnesses including bipolar disorder, psychosis, an established eating disorder or in cases where there is extensive self-harm or suicidal ideation.
Who should I speak to in case of an emergency?
We are not a mental health crisis service so if you have immediate concerns about your child or young person’s wellbeing, please contact the emergency services or your local NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service crisis telephone line.
