Speech and language assessment FAQs

Speech and language therapy (SALT) provides treatment, support and care for children who have difficulties with communication.

What is this assessment for?

Speech and language assessment measures language production, language comprehension, nonverbal communication and gestures (including gaze and joint attention in young children), pragmatic and figurative language, rhythm, volume, and content of speech.

Who carries out the assessment?

Our Speech and Language team is led by Lisa Lawrence (Specialist Speech and Language Therapist).

Speech and language therapists (SLTs) are allied health professionals (AHP).

What happens during the assessment?

Initially, you will be invited to attend an online consultation to discuss your child’s needs.

Based on the individual needs of each child, Lisa will then carry out the most appropriate assessment for your child during an in-clinic session, lasting around an hour.

We may also be able to support by online consultation, working directly with your child or providing advice to the family, carers or school.

What happens after the assessment?

A report is issued several weeks after the clinic assessment. We will update you by email through the process on the approximate timeframe for the report.

If reports are required more urgently, we are able to accommodate this for an additional fee.

Does the assessment follow HCPC and RCSLT guidelines?

Our assessments are conducted within both HCPC standards of conduct, performance, and ethics as well as the RCSLT Code of Ethics and Conduct.

Is there any follow up support?

We are able to recommend any follow up support that is needed and put you in touch with the relevant people and organisations.

What other professional support is available?

As we work as part of a team made up of professionals in educational psychology, clinical psychology, speech and language therapy and occupational therapy, we are able to offer support for any further needs identified in your assessment.

How much does it cost?

Due to the bespoke nature of our services, prices are available on request.

What if I am interested in several of your services?

If you are interested in combining this mental health assessment with one of our other assessments, we will be able to do so at a reduced fee.
